[Reserve Workshop] Request to reserve Jupyter Hub for the Bridge to Ocean Acoustics & Technology (BOAT) workshop

Describe the event
The Bridge to Ocean Acoustics & Technology (BOAT) program is an open education program for ocean acoustics via executable tutorials. We focus on:

1. Developing open, executable, and web-hosted tutorials that encapsulate fundamental ocean acoustics knowledge and techniques as living documents.
2. Growing the ocean acoustics education and research community through interactive and collaborative workshops.

We will be hosting an in-person BOAT workshop in New Orleans that will introduce fundamental ocean acoustics concepts via plain languages and interactive "widgets" that one can play with to develop physical intuition and think about ocean acoustic problems in a holistic manner (tutorial materials).

The workshop will cover both active and passive acoustic concepts and data exercises that are highly relevant to monitoring fish and marine mammals as part of NOAA Fisheries mission. Registered participants include a technician on a NOAA research vessel and a NOAA affiliate working on acoustics-related software.

Question
Would it be possible to give 5 organizers access to the Hub before May 17 for preparation and testing?

• Hub POC: Sent confirmation to organizer
• Organizer: I have given a password to hub POC or received one.
• Hub POC: Submitted a ticket to 2i2c for the workshop. Using password from prior workshop. Emailed organizer
• Organizer: Two weeks before event. I have tested the default hub images on the nmfs-openscapes.2i2c.cloud hub or conferred with hub POC on plan for workshop specific hub.
• Organizer: In the week before the event (or when POC indicates password should be live). I tested that the workshop password works and images work.
• Hub POC: After event, put in a 2i2c ticket to remove the participants directories, cleared shared-public, and reset password.

@leewujung do you have an estimate for the number of participants there will be, and how much compute resources each one will need? I.e., which of these options you will have them choose when the log in to the hub?

@ateucher : we will have 30-35 people using the hub, and we likely will ask them to use the smallest resource (1.9 GB RAM). We will test this next week and let you know if we have to use the 3.7 GB one.

it is pretty beefy since it is using py-rocket-geospatial-2 as that base image. That gives you everything you likely will need. BUT if you are doing Dask Gateway or coiled to create clusters, it is a bit too big to be efficient since Dask Gateway needs to copy the image to every VM. Then again if you are going to use Dask Gateway, we need to know since that spins up lots of VMs in the hub. I doubt you are using Dask Gateway for the class, but thought I'd mention it just in case.

Right, we will definitely not be using Dask Gateway for the class. The libraries we will use primarily are numpy, scipy, and ipywidget, and it is only during hands-on exercises the participants may need more computing resources. The data files we provide are very small though (MB), so hopefully won't be an issue.
