Steps to reproduce

I've been using Windows Terminal for a while, and it previously ran in Hardware Composed: Independent Flip mode when placed on my primary display (with MPO support detected). However, after updating to Windows 11 version 24H2, the terminal window consistently runs in Composed: Flip mode, regardless of which display it's on.

If I disconnect one of the monitors - i.e., use a single-monitor setup - Windows Terminal reverts to Hardware Composed: Independent Flip as expected.

I used PresentMon and dxdiag to confirm the presentation model mode and that MPO support is present.

Is anyone else experiencing this issue in a dual-monitor setup? Could this be a known issue with the Desktop Window Manager (DWM) in 24H2, or is it related to how the Windows Terminal window is created?

Any insights or suggestions would be appreciated.

While there's no functional malfunction, I've observed increased input latency, particularly noticeable at 60 Hz refresh rates.

I attempted to roll back to GeForce Game Ready Driver 566.03, but the issue persists with that version as well.

I explored the OverlayMinFPS registry setting as documented here. In my case, it's set to 0. I tried deleting and modifying this setting, but it doesn't affect the issue on Windows 11 24H2. The Windows Terminal window consistently uses the Composed: Flip presentation model mode, regardless of these changes.

FWIW I contacted them about this, and we couldn't reproduce the issue on the DWM maintainer's PC. I decided to not pursue it for a while longer just in case this is an Nvidia driver issue (there are a lot of them right now after all).

I’ve closed the issue since it’s definitely not specific to WT. On my Windows 11 machine, any GPU-accelerated app in windowed mode is forced to use Composed: Flip. I tested WezTerm and Alacritty (with Prefer layered on DXGI Swapchain for OpenGL builds), as well as several Steam games - all of them run with Composed: Flip in windowed mode, seemingly after the Windows 24H2 update 🤷‍♂️.

No, it's been a while. IIRC it was a typical CPU=AMD & GPU=NVidia machine though. It's good to know that this also affects other apps. I'll poke them again sometime soon.

Been struggling with same issue but for all windows , and i figured it out. MPO, and, in turn, hardware composed: independent flip is only active on MAIN monitor that your gpu thinks is main. easy to check with dxdiag report. If you swap cables around and reset monitors with custom resolution utility afterwards you can make it work for monitor you want it to work on.

@HyperRamzey Thanks for taking the time to respond and for sharing your dxdiag output. The behaviour you described worked for me before I updated to Windows 11 24H2. Could you please let me know which version of Windows you’re currently using? You can get this quickly by running winver and sharing the result.

Right now i am on 25H2 26200.7628 IoT Enterprise. But same "issue" persisted even on win10 \ older win11 versions. I asked my friend with 9070xt and he has same behavior both on win 10 and win 11.

I sent nvidia driver team this as a bug and they basically say that this is more or less expected behavior "Thank you for your feedback. I filed a bug so that our software team can look into this and they had a request. They wanted to know if you could capture a manual Windows crash dmp file in this state as described in the FAQ below:

Also, they wanted to know if possibly you checked if the MPO moved to the other monitor? " ->
Only monitor that is "main" gets MPO and uses hw composition. I did send them a dump but no reply followed. maybe cause i didnt saw their email for a month..

and i do not mean main in windows btw, gpu thinks what it wants to think what is main, and windows thinks differently, but if you swap cables and reset monitors you can get it to work on one you want it to (dxdiag should report maxplanes other than 0\1)

I’ve updated my Windows to version 25H2 (OS Build 26200.7628). After the update, DWM switches the Windows Terminal presentation model from Composed: Flip to Hardware Composed: Independent Flip but only during substantial rendering (i.e. when the window FPS goes above ~20). This behavior persists even when configuring the OverlayMinFPS registry setting, which does not appear to affect this behavior as described in the official documentation.
