Systematic analysis of aisstream.io data coverage and quality #37

Hi, thanks a lot for providing this open-access stream to worldwide AIS data! This is extremely valuable.

I have written two open-access publications analyzing the coverage and quality of the aisstream.io data in 2024 (and comparing to results from proprietary data) for two regions of the world (Baltic Sea and Tokyo Bay, Japan):

Baltic Sea: Maritime Activities Observed Through Open-Access Positioning Data: Moving and Stationary Vessels in the Baltic Sea. Geomatics 2025, 5, 69. https://doi.org/10.3390/geomatics5040069

Tokyo Bay: High-Resolution Mapping of Port Dynamics from Open-Access AIS Data in Tokyo Bay. Geomatics 2026, 6, 10. https://doi.org/10.3390/geomatics6010010

These studies were the byproduct of some related work to better understand how reliably these data can be used for other projects. And I can say, while the coverage is (still) patchy, it works very well for coastal areas at least in these two examples.

I have also made the streamed data and derived results from these studies openly available:
Baltic Sea: https://doi.org/10.6084/m9.figshare.29062715
Tokyo Bay: https://doi.org/10.6084/m9.figshare.29037401

The Baltic Sea region also covers the Kiel area of the other project #33 by @anbraten.
